Frequently asked questions

Can I make some concentrate before I need it and add the boiling water later?
Yes. The flavour will not be affected.
Does the filter work with large leaf teas?
No.  The filter works best with specially sourced tea fannings, or ground small-leaf tea.
How can I tell a good cup of tea?
With your eyes closed, ask three questions:
  • Does it taste like tea or does it have any flavour at all?
  • Do you like it?
  • Does it resemble Green tea or Jasmine or the flavour of tea you were expecting?
If the answer to all three is positive, you are drinking a good cup of tea.
How do I clean the filter?
It is sufficient to rinse it under the cold water tap.  If the filter clogs, simply run some bleach through once or twice.
How do I keep the tea fresh?
Tea stales after manufacture and loses its flavour. Tea-Cha packs the tea under vacuum to maintain freshness as long as possible. It is recommended to use the tea as fast as possible and probably to keep the tea in the refrigerator. Although there's no scientific evidence that this is beneficial, we do know that the finest Chinese teas are kept under refrigeration.
How do I measure the amount easily?
A regular tea-spoon will do it. Use a whole spoon for 2.5 grams black tea and around half that amount for green tea. If you use the same spoon each time, you'll quickly become familiar with the amount you like to use.
Isn’t small leaf tea the sweepings?
No. If you take a good piece of steak and mince it, it will still have the same flavour whatever the size of the meat.
A large pepper corn contains the same flavour components as finely ground pepper. The only difference is that the finely ground pepper releases its flavour much faster and more completely. This is what happens with tea. The tea leaves are produced in a machine and sifted – the smaller particles fall through the finest sieve and the larger particles fall out of the machine later.
What is the amount of tea per cup using the Tea-Cha’s Pet?
For a cup of around 200mls or 8 fluid ounces, use 2.5 grams of black tea and around 1.5 grams of green tea. If the tea is too strong, use less tea.
For White Tea, start with 1/2–3/4 of a tea spoon for a light gold colour.
For Green Tea and Jasmine Tea, start with 3/4 – a flat tea spoon.
For Pu-Erh Tea, start with one flat tea spoon or a touch more.
